The Pekingese is a favorite of Chinese emperors

The Pekingese is sometimes called the Peking Spaniel, Mandarin Pug, Peking Palace dog and many other names in different languages.

This breed originated in China thousands of years ago and is one of the most exotic, but at the same time recognizable dogs in the whole world.

The Pekingese is known for its distinctive physical characteristics. It has a flat and very short muzzle, on which the nose is located right between the eyes.

The small size makes this dog a good choice for residents of urban apartments.

Personality

In general, the Pekingese has a positive character: not aggressive, but not timid either. He's condescending to strangers, but he doesn't trust them right away.

Such a dog is usually very gentle towards his family. But, based on the fact that she was once highly respected in noble circles, she may show some royalty.

The Pekingese likes to be treated like a noble dog, not a helpless little pet curled up on its owner's lap.

A standard representative of the breed should have courage, boldness and self-esteem, not decorativeness, sophistication or weakness.

Pekingese are excellent companions for the elderly, who have the opportunity to devote a lot of time to this dog and give it all their attention.

It is not recommended to get a dog of this breed for families with young children. The Pekingese is always very scrupulous about protecting its food and territory, which can lead to the dog biting a child who does not respect the boundaries of the dog. In addition, the Pekingese may be offended by the fact that the child takes on the attention of the family, which could have gone to him-a loved one.

And the Pekingese barks a lot. He will bark at people, animals, cars, falling leaves — at everything movable, and sometimes immovable. If you don't pay attention to this problem, it will get out of control very quickly and it will be almost impossible to solve it.

Care and upbringing

The Pekingese makes quite high demands on care. Wool should be combed regularly with a brush with not too stiff bristles. Before that, it should be treated with water, a special spray or conditioner so that the hairs do not break.

In areas with “fringe", a metal comb should be used to prevent hair tangling. Also: it is necessary to constantly ensure that no foreign objects get stuck in this long hair on your legs during a walk.

It is necessary to bathe a Pekingese 1-2 times a month. The rest of the time, you can use dry shampoo to keep the Pekingese's coat clean and healthy.

The ears of a representative of this breed can collect dust and dirt. Therefore, they should be regularly checked for signs of sulfur build–up, irritation, or infection.

In addition, small dogs are prone to dental problems. Pekingese teeth should be cleaned at least once a week to prevent the accumulation of tartar and unpleasant odor. Pekingese claws are trimmed at least once a month.

The Pekingese loves noisy games and walks along busy streets, where there is a sense of life, where there is movement and everything around is "bustling". But he doesn't take physical exertion well. By the way, playfulness can disappear completely with age.

Due to the absence of the need for active activity, the Pekingese takes root well in any family with any daily routine.

As for the training of this dog, it often brings a lot of problems. The Pekingese thinks that he is the central figure in the house, and will not understand why he has to follow someone's commands or orders. But you can teach them the simplest concepts of good behavior if you start learning as early as possible.

Health

The average life expectancy of a Pekingese is 10-12 years. Pedigreed health problems may include: brachycephalic syndrome— a disease of the upper respiratory tract, degenerative diseases of the heart valves, dislocation of the patella, pododermatitis, diaper rash (in particular on the muzzle), pyloric stenosis, congenital dislocation of the elbow, bone dysplasia, perineal herniation, intervertebral disc disease, hydrocephalus, atlantoaxial subluxation, intestinal inversion, dry keratoconjunctivitis and some others.
